The Red River Center for Watershed Education was formed to create and implement education and professional programs in watershed science. The Center partners with K-12 and community education, resource management professionals, and decision makers in an effort to enhance leadership capacity and decision making in surface water quality issues affecting the Red River of the North Watershed. The Center serves as the catalyst organization whose mission transcends across the basin without constraints of state or provincial jurisdictions.

Watershed Education
Watershed education provides opportunities to break down barriers that hinder understanding between state and international boundaries. The Center is the leader and catalyst in developing a seamless watershed education program with content standards, monitoring and assessment protocols, and connections at the community, K-12, and post secondary education levels. The focus of our work is on partnership building for the benefit of the citizens living within the Red River of the North Watershed.
Professional Development
The Red River and You Teachers Institute is a professional development opportunity for teachers, educators, and community leaders; and is held in July of each year. The training is designed to help educators understand and incorporate Red River of the North Watershed education activities into their learning outcomes. International Water Conferences are held biannually. Plenary speakers and concurrent sessions address some of the most problematic issues of water management, flood damage reduction/mitigation, and natural resources protection/development confronting policy makers, scientists and citizens of the Red River Basin.
Leadership Development
The Center places importance on developing leadership capacity throughout the basin. Emphasis is laid on supporting existing programs and activities with updates and improvements that help develop local “citizen leaders”. Engaging in best management practices and decision making for sustainability and enhancement of the Red River of the North Watershed are major tasks.
