15th Annual River Watch Forum to Focus on Flooding
With dire spring flooding forecasts, the 2010 River Watch Forum will feature tools and techniques for flood forecasting along with the latest flood updates. Student scientists will learn how they can contribute much needed snow cover data to the National Weather Service to assist with more accurate forecasting.
Over 200 students from high schools throughout the Red River Basin will gather at the University of Minnesota Crookston campus on March 17th, 2010 to showcase results of their river monitoring efforts via displays and oral presentations. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards will be given for the best displays that achieve the goals of sound scientific inquiry and effective educational content.
Over 30 schools have been part of River Watch during the 15 years of the program-monitoring water quality at over 150 stream sites in the Red River Basin. The River Watch program is a hands-on, scientifically sound water quality monitoring and education program that imparts an appreciation of the Red River and its watershed. River Watch is designed to build leadership capacity, and connect students to local water resource managers, residents, and state officials involved with watersheds.
The River Watch Forum is hosted by Red River Watershed Management Board, the International Water Institute and supported by many other partners and sponsors. Support is also provided through the State of Minnesota Clean Water Fund.
