The Argos receivers are carried on-board NOAA series satellites. At least two satellites are simultaneously in service on polar, sun-synchronous, circular orbits at 850 km altitude, providing full global coverage. The center acquires data, performs necessary calculations, generates result files, and archives data. The results are obtained in near real-time, via Automatic Distribution Service (ADS)
The canoes are tracked using Argos Satellite System. Two of the canoes released October 16, 2002 have been fitted with satellite tracking devices so students and citizens can track the daily travels of these two small crafts.
Argos is a satellite-based system which collects, processes and disseminates environmental data from fixed and mobile platforms worldwide. What makes Argos unique is the ability to geographically locate the source of the data anywhere on the Earth.

Data Transmission
The canoes are equpped with transmitters. The transmitter starts sending signals to the satellites. The satellites collect the data and retransmit it to the Argos centers for processing. The watershed center retrieves the data, builds a aerial view image and provides these information online.
