Procedure/Outline

Read When God Made the Dakotas by Jim Kessler to your students. After each page, discuss the story and have students identify the landforms mentioned on each page and make a list of the landforms on the board. Have students choose 5 to 7 landforms from the board and make a picture or symbol to represent each chosen landform. Give each student a ring, piece of canvas, string, and needle. Sew canvas to the ring using a crisscross pattern I will show them. Paint the front of the shield white. After the white paint dries, paint th elandforms they have chosen on the Shield. Students must then discribe each landform.

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

Give students a sheet explaining the sewing procedure on the back of the shield.

Assessments

Students will identify the landforms ont he shield and share what each are to students in small groups.
