Really, a 10 - year old flood?

Objectives

Students will understand the term - Ten year flood. A 10 - year flood of the Red River Valley occurs at 810 ft. msl-msl means sea level. Sea level is zero msl.

Procedure/Outline

Cut out 10 squares - 2 in.x 2 in. from tag board. Make 9 squares blue. Make 1 square yellow. Place squares in a bowl. Without looking have 10 students cloose a sqaure one at a time.If they choose a blue it means no flood. If they choose the yellow it is a flood year. example: NF - 9 F - 1. How many yellow did you have in ten tries? How many ten year floods did you have? Every year you have a one in ten chance of having a flood, no matter what has happened in the last ten years. 

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

Have groups of 4 or 5 students do the same experiment as listed above. Discuss and compare results. Do the same procedure for a 100 year flood. 

Assessments

Ask the question - If we have a flood in 2007 will the next flood of that callaber be in 2017?
