Procedure/Outline

This will be a year long study of the Red River. After talking to students about where their drinking water comes from and asking students if they think it is safe to drink, we will talk about the Fargos water filtration plant. Students in their cooperative groups will create 4 graphs to record data thoughout the year. Graph 1 Temperature of water 2 Dissolved oxygen in water 3 Flow in FPS - feet per second 4 Clarity The students will conduct a water quality test once in the Fall, winter, Spring and Summer and recordtheir findings on their graph posters back in the room. This will be done 3 times during the year. I will take the Summer reading since students are not in school at that time. The 4th graders will then take a walking filed trip to the Red River. Our school is 5 blocks from Lindenwood Park. Students will take water samples and return to the classroom to conduct the tests. Results of the tests will be recorded on their graphs. The students will go on a field trip to visit the Fargo Water Treatment Plant. We are fortunate that the treatment plant is one block from Clara Barton School. In the Spring of the year, students will compare their findings with other groups and discuss the results of the tests.

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

Because students are not in school during the Summer months, I will collect water samples before school starts. Miss Frizzle at the water works can be read to students tp prepare them for the field trip.

Assessments

Results will be discussed and students will look at each others graphs to se if everyone is in agreeance. If some group is way off the class will discuss what might have happened and which do they think is correct. Students will talk about how safe their drinking water is. If their is a descrepency in the reuslts, we can call the water treatment plant to varify the results and give us the correct readings. If their is a lot of discrepency in the data, the water treatment plant can be called to varify.

Other Comments

The science mesuring tools will have to be borrowed from the middle school. I am going to see if their are some monies around so we can purchase a kit of our school.
