Time Requirement

20 Minutes

Procedure/Outline

I would present four or five 20 minute segments throughout a water unit, using the book "The Wonders of Rivers" by Rae Bains. This book follows a river , introducing water related vocablulary ,descriptions and illustrations. Some of the vocabulary and sequence concepts are "tiny trickles of water, snow cover melting,streams,erosion,groove/river valley,sediment/island,river mouth, delta, flood plain, canyon, caverns, waterfall, pollution, fast flowing, bubbling..." We would read 1 or 2 pages at a sitting and then begin construction of a classroom land form tray of modeling clay. Each 20 minute segment would introduce a land form created or used by our river. The clay model would be created on a large jelly roll pan so our river can travel as we expand our land forms. The one end of the pan would hold mountains with snow cover (melting ice cubes), passing to streams, sand and rock, islands, ...rapids,caverns......,Once our teacher created tray is completed, each child could create their own mini version on disposable aluminum pans.

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions
