Procedure/Outline

Materials Needed: 6 inch metal or wooden hoop Canvas cut into pieces to fit around the hoops Acrylic paints paint brushes cleaning supplies newspaper for desk tops string/thread needles scissors Procedure: I would use this as an assessment tool after a water quality unit. 1. Tell the students that this will be their assessment tool for the water quality unit and to stress that they should do their best work. 2. Discuss the importance of shieds in the Native American culture. Show pictures of some shield. 3. The students then need to put their canvas around the hoop. The should sew the back of the canvas together in the way that the example shields are. 4. They should paint the background of the shield white and wait for it to dry. (Second Day) 5. The students should paint their shields using symbols to show the importance of clean water to living things. They could also show ways to keep the water clean, how to test the water, and ways that people, animals and plants use water. 6. The students should write a paragraph explaining their symbols and why they were included.
