Procedure/Outline |
| Materials:
soil pit
soil samples
hammer or rubber mallet
paper cups
pencils
ink or black permanent markers
artist acrylic (clear gloss medium)
sponges
water color paper
masking tape
Day 1 Examining a soil pit and collecting soil samples. 30 minutes
1. Teacher digs a soil pit approximately 2 feet by 2 feet. (Be sure one face is clean and straight.)
2. Children examine the soil pit and identify the various types of soil layers.
3. Describe the soils in terms of color, what the texture feels like (fine, coarse, smooth, gritty,etc.), what it smells like and organic content.
4. Collect samples of the various soils in the soil pit.
Day 2 Painting with Soil (One hour)
1. Crush dried soil samples with the hammer or rubber mallet until it is a fine powder.
2. Place the different soil types in different cups.
3. Sketch a drawing with a pencil on water color paper. Outline the drawing with ink or marker.
4. Using masking tape, tape edges of paper to desk. (This ensures artwork will dry flat.)
5. Pour small amounts of clear acrylic into paper cups and add small amounts of soil until desired color is attained.
6. Use paint brushes and sponges to paint picture.
7. When artwork is dry, another paint layer may be applied.
8. Outline with ink or marker.
