Time Requirement

40 Minutes

Procedure/Outline

Define the terms riparian zone, flood, ecosystem, dam, watershed, sediment, velocity. Discuss the importance of a riparian zone, why they are in trouble, and how they can be protected and restored. Refer to the River Keepers handout on the importance of healthy riparian zones.

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

Have a handout with the vocabulary words for students who have difficulty with taking notes. Make simple drawings of where to locate a riparian zone.

Assessments

Have the students draw where a riparian zone would be located, and have them use at least three of the vocabulary words to explain why riparian zones are in trouble. This would make for an excellent end of the period quiz. Also, a two team debate could be set up with real life issues for each team to take a side on. They could in this way understand the real issues at stake in council meetings and board meetings where these issues are being handled.

Other Comments

A community awareness evening could be organized by the students to help educate and inform their parents and community regarding water issues in their watershed. This could be a final drama to the end of a watershed unit.
