Procedure/Outline |
| Materials:
15cm metal ring
fabric
acrylic paint
paint brushes
needles
sinew
construction paper
sinew or thread for sewing
star pattern handout
Day 1 40 minutes
1. Read Story: Legend of the Indian Paintbrush by Tomie dePaola
2. Discuss the vision quest of young Native warriors and how they portrayed this and other important aspects of their identity on a shield.
3. Brainstorm for characteristics and attributes that identify and describe who they are as children.
4. Simulate a vision quest. Each child goes outside on the playground and finds a quiet spot to mediatate about who they are and what pictures would depict their attributes.
Day 2 Design a shield 1 hour
1. Cover a metal ring with a piece of fabric. Sew fabric to backside of ring using a star pattern as per handout.
2. Paint shield white. Dry.
3. Paint pictures of their identity on the shield. Include a border.
4. Trace four feathers and attach to shield.
Two feathers will symbolize two accomplishments in their life and two feathers will symbolize two dreams they have for their future.
5. Children share their personal shield stories with their classmates.
6. Display on bulletin board.
