Objectives

1. Students will classify junk into categories. 2. Students will demonstrate their environmental responsibility by cleaning up an ecosystem.

Procedure/Outline

Materials needed: gloves, plastic bags, plastic magnifying containers, park area with plenty of biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) objects. Method: 1. Define the terms biotic and abiotic. 2. Students should be placed into groups of two. 3. Bring students outside to a large park area. 4. Explain to students that they will need to collect non-living objects and place them in the bag. Living objects should be placed into the plastic container. At least 15-20 objects should be collected. 5. Bring students back into the classroom. 6. Hand out large manila tag papers to each group and ask them to classify items into categories.(ie. plastic or metal) Students should illustrate these objects on their paper. 

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

1.The class could clean up a section of roadway and classify some of the objects when they return to class. 2. Take your class to a beach area that needs cleaning up and have the students classify these objects back in class. 

Assessments

10 marks for project. 1) 5 marks should be given if students have successfully classified their junk into 5 separate categories.(4 marks for 4 categories etc.) 2) 5 marks should be given for effort/neatness. Take into account spelling and boldness for the category titles.
