Objectives

Procedure/Outline

Materials: 5 Paper bags filled with samples of different kinds of soil, 5 trays and water, pencil and paper 1. Students will work in partners. 2. One partner will hold a bag while the other partner has the paper and pencil. 3. The partner with the bag will open it and without looking put their hand inside the bag to feel and verbally describe what the soil in the bag feels like. 4. The second student will write down the observations. 5. Next, the students will open each bag and add more observations and describing words to the paper. 6. The students will then empty their bag of soil on a tray and poor a small amount of water on the soil. 7. Observations will be recorded. 8. More water will be poured on the soil, with observations written 9. Next, in a class discussion students will make connections to their soil experiments and the soil in their community. Also connections can be made to flooding and water conservation.  

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

The teacher may wish to demonstrate the water pouring as a class 

Assessments

Students will make clear and consise observations and contribute to the class discussion  

Other Comments

The different types of soils can be further explored by planting similar seeds in each sample.
