Time Requirement

Procedure/Outline

Brainstorm animals that come to mind that occupy most of their life in the water. Following the discussion read the story rom the magazine Native Waters page 3 and 4. Read it orally with the students. Ask them to compare the list they made with the ones that were mentioned in the story. Talk about the snake that was mentioned and ask them to tell you what they know about snakes and their water habits. If there are computers available go and do research on various water snakes. Share the information found. For a follow up activity there are rubber snakes you can buy at the dollar store and they can paint and create their own snake. There is also a good book to share called "The Snake that was scared of Humans". It will bring up good discussions on the fear of snakes.

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

If there are no computers available, I suggest that you get snake books, or do some of the research on the internet, make a list of snakes and give to various groups to see what they find out. If you plan on doing all the activities, it may take 50 minutes/2 class periods to complete.

Assessments

The discussion of the story and the information found on the research let you know what was absorbed. You could make a guided worksheet that they would have to use or answer when they were doing their research if you would like to grade this activity.
