Identify elements of a myth or legend; Identify cultural archetypes such as earth, mother, death. Demonstrate an understanding of the role culture plays in the development of language and oral and written traditions of a society. Improve oral communication skills.

Procedure/Outline

Students will receive a copy of the Devils lake Sea Monster from this website: www.devilslakend.com/tourism/lake_legends.htm and read. Class discussion follows on who is the hero, what is the conflict, how is culture demonstrated to the reader. Just to name a few examples. Then the class Receives information on the early history of the Red River of the North. Students will write their own legend of the Red River monster. Students will conduct peer review and use a teacher designed rubric to measure their proficiency . Students will read aloud examples of the legends for class discussion.  

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

Artistic interpretations of these legends could be part of a cross-curriculum approach in combining Art with History. 

Assessments

Teacher designed rubric will assess their understanding and demonstration of archetypes, elements of a legend, communications skills. Peer review.
