Objectives

Students will produce and interpret their life and goals with Native American Symbols

Procedure/Outline

Materials: Paper, Pencil, tagboard--cut into 9 inch diameter circle, paint, crayons, construction paper cut into feather shapes-- 4 inches long, thread Steps: 1. Students will write a paragraph describing themselves with at least three details. Also students will have at least two accomplishments and two goals for the future. 2. Students will learn about Souix-Plain Native American symbols and use of colors. 3. Student will synthesize their paragraph and the information about the Souix--making connections with symbols and colors to their own life. 4. Students will decorate a shield--the 9 inch tagboard to illustrate their own life using Native American symbols and colors. 5. Student will use paints and crayons to decorate the shield 6. Students will cut out up to four feathers out of construction paper and write a goal or accomplishment on each feather. 7. Students will attach each feather to the shield using thread and a tiny hole. 8. After completion, students will share their shield and the meaning to the class. 

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

Students may color and cut out symbols instead of creating illustrations free hand. 

Assessments

1. Students have written grade level paragraph 2. Students have expressed their self portrait artisically 3. Students have learned and demonstrated their knowledge about Native American cultures.  

Other Comments

The shield is a Plains Native America activity...other Native tribes may have a different artifact such as Pacific Northwest Indians might use totem poles and Desert tribes may have sand paintings or weavings.
