Procedure/Outline |
| Divide into groups of three. Each group of students represents a group of developers that is planning to build a new community in the year 1904.
Groups will discuss and list the factors that they believe are important in deciding on the site for the development.
A period of class discussion will allow students to share their ideas.
Discuss the importance of the availibilty of water.
Students will be given a map of an area showing only water features and asked to choose a site.
Ask students what means of transportation were available in 1904 and if that would have any affect on their choice.
Give students an overlay showing the main rail lines and give them a chance to change their minds if they so choose.
Students will then receive an overlay showing topographic features and again be given a chance to change their minds.

| A more advanced group can also be introduced to the influence of soil type on the stability of a structure with the possible addition of some soil investigations. |
Assessments |
| Student will present their site selection to the class and defend their choice. |
