Procedure/Outline

1. Students must first find the surface area of Devils Lake. Place a transparency of Devils Lake on 1-cm graph paper. Scale the transparency to 1 square = 4 square miles Calculate the approximate area by using the formula: Area=U(I+(B/2)) U=the area of one square I=the number of full squares B=the number of border squares 2. Students must convert the surface area from square miles to quare feet. (1 square mile = 27,878,400 square feet) 3.Students then calculate the volume of water removed in cubic feet by multiplying the surface area by the depth of the water being removed. (1 foot in this problem) 4.Students then convert the volume from cubic feet to gallons. Do this by using the conversion:1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons.

Modifications/Adatption/Extensions

Student may try metric conversions to liters as well.
