Students will develop a working understanding of stereotypical symbols representative of a particular culture through a hands-on activity of tie-dying t-shirts with one or more symbols and explain something about the meaning of each

Procedure/ Outline
|
Depending on the culture of study, students will investigate
through the use of reference texts and/or the Internet symbols, drawings, etc.,
symbolic of that culture. This symbol must be within their ability to replicate
(with the teacher's help). It will be drawn on contact paper, cut out, placed on
the t-shirt, and through the prep process - misted with bleach, washed, dried
and given to the student after they have spoken to the teacher or class about
the significance of their symbols

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions
|
Stencils from various cultures could be supplied. Students could write out/sing/develop poetry as a means of explaining their symbols. Other material could be used like a story board, wall hanging or placemats. |

Rubrics developed including: 1. Research using at least two sources 2. Fits the culture or region 3. Neatness 4. Explanation - completeness
