Objectives

1. Integration of music with other curricular areas
2. Relate the sound produced by an instrument to the type and quality of materials used in its construction
3. Review musical tone color
4. Recognize how other cultures create rainsticks/rasps from materials made within our own environment
5. Imitate the sound of nature with various materials

Materials Needed


See pp. 442-5 of "Project Wild" Curriculum Guide

Time Requirement

Prep: 30 minutes; Activity: up to 1 week

Procedure/ Outline

1. Review what homeroom classroom discussed pages 442-5.
2. Follow guidelines on bottom of page 443-4.
3. Build their own rainsticks.
4. Design their own story pictorially of self on rainstick or make one up. 5. Use rainstick with Aqua Tunes, pages 67 - 70, "Project Wet" Curriculum Guide

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Make musical rasps, maracas, etc., other instruments that imitate sounds of nature - thunder, hail, etc

Assessment

1. How students will best make sound of rain with rainstick...and other sounds with other materials.
2. Speculate what materials may have been used by other cultures.
3. Ability to make rainstick. 
4. Ability to complete message on rainstick
