Warm-up: Show potted plant, rock and student. Ask other students to identify the two things that are living. Next the students will discover what is needed for life.
1. Circulate the Life Boxes. Ask each student to open a box and look for life. Note what's inside. After each student has examined the contents, he will place the cover back on the box and pass it on.
2. Ask students what they found in each box. They will probably answer soil and water. Their interest should grow when you tell them that each box contains two more items.
3. Circulate the boxes again and repeat the question "What is in the box?" If a long pause from the students, provide the answer.
4. Tell students that each box contains the four things necessary for life: water, soil and air and light when it enters the open box.
