Objectives

Identify the role of water in transmission of disease. Compare symptoms of several waterborne diseases and analyze the characteristics of environments that promote the transmission of theses diseases around the world

Standards Addressed

Awareness of contagious diseases and methods of transmission

Materials Needed

Symptoms of disease, envelopes, disease descriptions, pencils and notepads, disease information from the CDC, US map

Time Requirement

1 class period

Procedure/ Outline

Following oral reports from Poison Pump lesson, students will compare symptoms of their disease with the others in the class. Goal is to locate others with the same disease that they have. Try to decide how they might have contracted the disease. Discuss control cards. Using information from the CDC plot on the US map where major disease outbreaks have occurred. Discuss whether that these were waterborne or another type of transmission

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Using the disease descriptions and report information from the Poison Pump lesson, identify which disease they have

Assessment

Participation in the activity and determining what disease they have

Other Comments

Prepare symptoms from other diseases covered in the oral reports to expand beyond waterborne diseases
