12 tongue depressors, one round dowel for axle, 2 wheels, 2 chopsticks, 2 long and 4 short dowels, wood glue, utility scissor, accessories and lots of imagination and patience |
Time Requirement |
One week |
Procedure/ Outline |
Research oxcarts (their purpose, structure and alternative transportation vehicles.) Cut the rounded ends off the tongue depressors and split two of them lengthwise. Lay 5 tongue depressors side by side with the axle crosswise in the center, then glue two short square dowels to the tongue depressors on either side of the axle letting the axle turn freely between them. Next glue a cut piece of tongue depressor onto the square dowels, again allowing the axle to move freely within. Turn the dried card bed over and glue the sides onto it. Construct your sides and ends and attach. Glue the chopsticks on the underside up to the casings of the axle using the square end to attach more firmly to the tongue depressors. Attach the wheels to the axle and glue. Accessorize your cart with furs, blankets, ropes and whatever your imagination comes up with

Assessment |
Students would show and describe the function and structure they have made. They would self- and peer-evaluate their success at meeting the requirements set up before their constructions. They would also be assessed as to whether or not they had all necessary supplies for the journey or buffalo hunt |
