Objectives

Students will analyze the purpose for various games played by Native Americans

Standards Addressed

#7 - Culture. Understand the relationship between socio-economics and culture

Materials Needed

Sticks, paints, stones (5 per person), basket, disks (5 per person).

Time Requirement

1-2 class periods

Procedure/ Outline

Students will be taught several games played by Native American children from the Dakota area by taking a participating role. After playing Buffalo Hunt, Fire Keeper, Sneak and Hubbub, students will evaluate the purpose of each game and analyze its potential effectiveness

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Students could develop their own games. Olympic sports could be discussed and evaluated in the same manner as the Native American sports were evaluated

Assessment

Rubrics developed including: 1. Research using at least two sources 2. Fits the culture or region 3. Neatness 4. Explanation - completeness
