Objectives

Appreciate the age of water. Compare the proportion of time water and life processes have existed on earth

Standards Addressed

Math 2; Geometry and Spatial Sense Science - 1; Unifying Concepts - 4; Life Science - 5; Earth Science - 1, 4, 6; Language Arts - 1, 2, 5

Materials Needed

Glass of water, 33 foot length of rope, clothespins, tape, index cards, piece of yarn, geologic time line (optional), butcher paper, drawing and painting materials

Time Requirement

2 - 50 minute periods

Procedure/ Outline

1. Show glass of water and ask how old they think water is
2. Create a timeline: "Earth Formed Present". Have students mark a "W" for when water was formed, an "L" for when life began, and an "H" for when humans appeared
3. Read paragraph on page 172 and discuss what could have happened to the water in the glass since its formation
4. Make a timeline from the rope; on index cards have students write something long ago that could have happened in H20
5. Help students clip cards on the timeline (all human events will be clipped within 2 mm. of the Now end of the rope. Early life forms about 7 meters of a 10 meter long time line
6. Students compare amount of time water, life, and humans have been on earth
7. Hang butcher paper and assign groups to illustrate events that occurred during earth's history along the appropriate sections of the timeline

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Make a timeline that focuses only on human history and how the use of water has changed and/or stayed the same through time

Assessment

Have students indicate on a timeline the appearance of water, life, and humans on earth
