Objectives


Students will appreciate the age of water - compare the proportion of time that water and life processes have existed on earth

Standards Addressed

None

Materials Needed

Glass of water, 33 foot rope, tape, clothespins, index cards, yarn, timeline, newsprint, drawing and painting materials

Time Requirement

Prep: 20 minutes; Activity: 2 - 50 minutes periods

Procedure/ Outline

Warm-up: Have students look at a glass of water and guess how old it is. Then have them make a line on paper. Have them put a "W" on the line at the point they think water was first formed. Have them put an "L' when they think life started, and an "H" when they think humans first appeared. Have them write why they chose these proportions.
Activity: 1. Read the paragraph on page 172 from Project Wet. Have them answer the questions found after the paragraph. .
2. Hang the rope. Label one end "Earth Formed" and the other end "Now."
3. Tell students the rope timeline will be used to record events that have happened on Earth.
4. Have students write events that happened involving water on index cards and hang them where they think they fit on the timeline.
5. Help them out. Have students compare the time that water, life, and humans have been on earth.
6. Have students draw events of items on index cards and hang them where they go on the timeline. Help them and discuss

Assessment

1. Have students indicate on a timeline the appearance of water, life and humans on earth. Compare the proportions of time humans, water, and other life forms have occupied earth
