Objectives

Recognize factors that contribute to avoiding contagious diseases; describe how infectious diseases are spread; identify ways to reduce the chances of becoming infected with a disease

Standards Addressed

Awareness of contagious diseases and methods of transmission

Materials Needed

Ladle, clean spray bottle, water, ford coloring, clear container with water, tag board or butcher paper, markers, computer, paper and copy machine

Time Requirement

Activity: 1 class period; Survey - 2 days; Compile results - 1 class period; Posters - 1 class period

Procedure/ Outline

After reading about contagious diseases in Health book and doing Poison Pump lesson, we will list preventive measures to help resist diseases. Discuss importance of each. Rewrite in the form of questions. Compile questions into a Health Survey. Divide students into groups and have them survey all students and faculty in grades 7 - 12. Compile results on individual surveys (+ for yes; - for no), class results, and junior high and high school results. Discuss results of survey and why it can be difficult to maintain healthy habits. Write newspaper article with results of survey and conclusions that can be drawn form the Health Survey conducted. Make posters encouraging healthy habits and put up around the school
