Objectives

Students will
1. Recognize factors that contribute to avoiding cold and influenza;
2. Describe how some diseases are spread by water;
3. Identify ways water can reduce chances of becoming infected with disease

Standards Addressed

None

Materials Needed

Ladle or cup, clean spray bottle, water, food coloring, clear container willed with water, paper, tokens, small bags, timer or watch with second hand

Time Requirement

Prep: Part I - 10 min.; Part II - 20 min. Activity: Part I - 20 min. Part II - 30 min

Procedure/ Outline

1. Students brainstorm preventative measures that help their bodies resist disease. Discuss why each is important. After brainstorming, rewrite list as a question.
2. Conduct a class survey using questions form the list. Students answer with a "+" or "-".
3. Discuss results of survey

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

Invite public health nurse to talk to class. Talk about why and how we stay healthy. Research diseases. Discuss why we wash hands. Do hand washing experiment

Assessment

Have class discussion on how diseases are spread. Discuss healthy habits to protect us from getting sick
