Objectives

Students will make inferences about the importance of adaptations in order for wildlife and other animals to survive

Standards Addressed

MN Graduation standards - Middle Level - Living Systems

Materials Needed

paper, pencils, calculators (optional), story "I'm Thirsty" (attached), "Questions - I'm Thirsty" (attached)

Time Requirement

45 minutes

Procedure/ Outline

1. Provide students with the story "I'm Thirsty"
2. Given the information from the story, ask students to carry out the calculations found in the "Questions - I'm Thirsty"
3. Predict various complications that could develop if there were only one-half the amount of water you calculated as being needed in step e) of the "Questions - I'm Thirsty!"
4. Discuss the importance of adaptations to wildlife and other animals based on the example given in the story "I'm Thirsty

Modifications /Adaptions/ Extensions

None

Assessment

1. Study topographical maps of animal habitat and predict their food requirements based on available vegetation. Research caloric value of available foods and the caloric intake per day/week/year. 2. Find out what the available seasonal water supply is in a desert region. Predict the seasonal maximum carrying capacity of the site based on water supply.
2. Discuss the importance of adaptation. Describe examples of adaptation and its importance to any species of animal (other than the example listed in the story)
