Objectives

Students will identify ND's main river water sources and tributaries that flow into the rivers.

The Water Story Booklet Magazine: Project Wet, PO Box 170575, Bozeman, MT 59717-0575, 1(866)337-5486, www.projectwet.org, Water in ND, A Reference Guide, by ND State Water Commission, 900 E Blvd Ave, Bismarck, ND 58505, blue rope, flags for town names.

Time Requirement

 

Procedure/outline

Begin with the article "What's Your Water Address?". Students draw an X on map where they live, find nearby river-*on that river, follow that river ot see where it flows. Discuss ground water as another water source. Think of a relative or friend who lives far away. Draw another X on the map, find a water source where they liev. Place city,state names in a bag-pull out names-locate rivers nearby, follow that flow of water on a map. Discuss the main rivers in ND (Missouri, Souris, James, Red). Discuss how rivers were used as "highways" by early people.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Rope Map Activity (as in class)-use blue rope for rivers in ND. Flags to label towns in ND-students line up and walk along the tributaries that flow into the main rivers.

Assessment

Students should be able to tell their local water source and the other main river souces in ND.
