Objectives

Students will discover the difference between 2 soil types. Difference soils hold & drain water differently.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

3 clear jars & lids, ruler, 3 different soil samples, graph paper, shovel/bucket, masking tape, 9 oz cup

Time Requirement

60 min over a 2 day period

Procedure/outline

1. Fill each jar 1/2 full of water. 2. Pour enough soil into 1 jar so the water level reaches the top and label the jar. 3. Do the same for the other 2 samples. 4. Place lids on and shake until all water & soil are mixed. 5. Let them set for 24 hours. 6. After 24 hours, observe the layers of sediment. 7. ID layers of clay, silt, sand, gravel, & organic matter. 8. Measure the depth of each sediment for each jar. Record the information. 9. Graph your data and make comparisons.

Student will evaluate their findings in a class forum presentation.
