Objectives

Students will describe characteristics of wetlands, demonstrate understanding & importance of wetlands to wildlife & humans.

Standards Addressed

Sci (K-4) 1a, 2a,c, 3c, 4b,c, 5a,b

Materials Needed

Sponge, bed or pillow, egg beater, cradle, strainer, filter, antacid, cereal, soap

Time Requirement

1-2 hours

Procedure/outline

1) Prepare "mystery metaphor container" 2) Discuss local wetlands-visualize wetlands 3) Share sites, smells, visualization, etc.-list items 4) Identify plants/animals in wetland 5) Give overview of baric ecological activities 6) Provide students with mystery container 7) Students reach into container 8) Students will explain in a metaphor how the object is like a wetland

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Provide 3 choices of how the object is like a wetland. Student will choose one. Visit a wetland.

Assessment

Students will select 3 species of animals & describe how the wetlands are important to each.
