Objectives

Through the use of a teacher model, students will discover how a wetland works.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

easal paper, modeling clay, florist foam, 9 x 13 pan, indoor/outdoor carpet (small piece), scissors, pictures of wetlands and wetland plants & animals, water, muddy water

Time Requirement

40 minutes-90 w/extensions

Procedure/outline

1)Spread modeling clay in 1/2 of tray. 2)Shape clay so it gradually slopes down. 3) cut carpeting to cover 1/2 of model. 4)Discuss what makes a wetland. 5)Show pictures of ND wetlands. 6)use model to demonstrate funtions of wetland.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Children develop their own wetland.

Assessment

Have the student describe in writing the wetland functions as demonstrated by the activity.
