Objectives

Students will learn to identify native ND prairie wildflowers & grasses.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

1) Prairie Wildflowers & Grasses of ND by Chris Grondahl & Andrea Evelsizer-a ND game & fish booklet (701)328-6300-to order more for students. 2)Attracting wildlife to your backyard, Chris Grondahl-ND Game & Fish booklet. 3)Planting wildflowers, North Dakota Outdoors, July 1990 pg 20-21. John LaDuke. 4)Class worksheet-uses of plants 1800s. 5)ck ND websites for listing of Native flowers & grasses.

Time Requirement

1 day fieldtrip/2-3 days followup

Procedure/outline

1)Fieldtrip, if possible to state park or area where native flowers & grasses grow (discuss seasonal differences in variety of flowers) 2)In class, group or individual work, display flowers in binders-research each to find- 3)Each variety needs 5 items listed: habitat, flower discription & when it blooms, size of flowers, family name, other names, plant uses and other interesting facts. 4)When binders are complete-follow up with Jeopardy type game using the topic areas coverd in their research (see#3). (use these same questions on a test later, if needed)

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

1)Wildflowers/grasses can be dried/pressed-later, mounted on tagboard & displayed in classroom. 2)Speaker in from park or game and fish, etc. to shoe more samples and where they are found.

Assessment

1)Use photos form Prairie Wildflower & Grasses of ND by Chris Grondahl & Andrea Evelsizer (order more copies-game & fish dept)-make cards with pictures-match to info cards. 2)Jeopardy questions could be used as test questions.

Other Comments

Wildflower Jeopardy & matching card assessment could be played without field trip.
