Objectives

Understand why wetlands are important to the environment and humans, students should understand the functions that wetlands preform.

Standards Addressed

Water in 8th grade, watershed

Materials Needed

Sponge, pillow/bed, cradle, sieve/strainer, filter, antacid, eggbeater, large bag, cereal, soap

Time Requirement

25 minutes

Procedure/outline

1. Collect all items and place in a large bag. 2. Discuss wetland charactaristics, features, what it is like using our senses. 3. List possible plants/animals in a wetland. 4. Talk about how a wetland is kind of like other common things, example sponge=absorbs run-off. 5. Bring out each item seperately from the bag. 6. Have each person write on a piece of paper how the item is like a wetland or characteristic of a wetland. 7. Continue until all items have been taken out of the bag. 8. Class discussion on response.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Look at pictures of wetlands to point out responses and have students decide which ones fit.
