Objectives

Students will create an authentic replica or recreate an artifact such as a buoy, markers, scuba diver's flag; students will demonstrate knowledge of (lake) regulations pertaining to recreation on area lakes.

Standards Addressed

ND #4 Social Studies: "Students use social studies resources for a variety of puposes.

Materials Needed

Online sources: www.dnr.state.mn.us;www.wildlifelicense.com/mn Students will provide additional materials.

Time Requirement

1 class period and students' homework time to complete their project

Procedure/outline

Students will select a subtopic involving recreation on our area lakes: swimming, fishing, boating, scuba diving, etc. Students will research their topic and prepare a class presentation to demonstrate their understanding of the topic. Additionally, they will create their own visual aid to replicate an "artifact" related to recreational on area lakes. Examples: buoy, scuba diver's flag, regulation license, lures.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

This activity could be used in conjunction with Minnesota History or North Dakota Studies

Assessment

Oral presentaiton followed by peer evaluation.

Other Comments

Water safety is alway a concern so this activity could raise awareness for improvement.
