Objectives

Students will research pertinent water quality/river quality topics.

Standards Addressed

Science as Inguiry: Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry. Science & Technology: Understanding about scientific inquiry. Abilities of technological design. Understanding about science & technology. Science in Personal & Social Perspectives: Natural resources, environmental quality, natural & human induced hazards.

Materials Needed

Maps of selected rivers, weblinks to local stream data "Surf Your Watershed"-http://www.epa.gov/surf

Time Requirement

 

Procedure/outline

KWL of tubing & Buffalo, Ottertail, & Crow Wing Rivers. Make list of factors that would affect tubing-should include depth of water, clarity, quality, obstructions (natural & manmade), flow, access, etc. After discussion, students research (texts, maps, internet) answer for "Want to Know" part & verify "Know" partassigning different rivers to different groups. River Groups find/make maps to indicate rivers, towns (access points) on river, data collection sites, known tubing sites, etc. Groups share info on sites with class.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Preteach internet use - "A Tangled Web" from Healthy Water Healthy People. Follow with unit(s) on monitoring water quality.

Assessment

Have students: list factors that affect tubing, research & share those factors on selected rivers, present their conclusions about tubing on Buffalo.
