Objectives

Students will find data on 3 tributaries of Red River. Students will identify flow of water through watershed.

Standards Addressed

Unifying Concepts & Processes: Evidence, models, & explanation.

Materials Needed

Red River Watershed Map (unlabeled), Internet access

Time Requirement

 

Procedure/outline

Discuss tributaries & watersheds accessing student's prior knowledge. List vocabulary of rivers/tribs. such as source, confluence, headwaters, elevation change, meander. Students label major towns/landmarks/obstructions, etc. of 3 tributaries of Red River on map. Show direction of flow, elevations of major points & highlight the path of water in these three from source to Lake Winnipeg (Hudson Bay-or further if on map).

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Students should have experience in locating valid information on Internet. "A Tangled Web" from Healthy Water Healthy People is good lesson. Students should read Paddle to the Sea before lesson.

Assessment

Assess vocabulary knowledge with "Jeopardy" game. Given a blank Red River watershep map, students can trace flow of water from source ot Lake Winnipeg.

Other Comments

Follow lesson by decorating & launching canoes in a tributary of Red River.
