Procedure/outline
Discuss with class ways they use water. Where does it come from? What did people do 100 years ago to get their water? Play water hauling game-discuss purpose of game. Divide class into 2 teams-each team gets 2 1-gal buckets. Task: haul water from source to spot 150 feet away. Organize the game as a relay race. Have students predict how many trips it will take to fill the can. How much time? Begin race! Were predictions right? What size in gallons is garbage can? Using a variety of containers, estimate their volumes.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions
Discuss ways people in the past hauled water. Read "The Bath" from activity 'Easy Street' p. 387. Compare past usage to present (practices). Discuss reasons we use more water now than in the past. |
Assessment
Estimate volumes of different containers. Express feelings about hauling water. Design mural or perform skit conveying the advantages & disadvantages of readily availabe water. |
Other Comments
