Objectives

1) To improve skills in completing a survey; 2) To test theory and analytical skills in survey results; 3) To link theoretical information with human behavior.

Standards Addressed

ND Social Studies Standard #8 Sociology/Psychology "Students understand the basic concepts of Sociology and Psychology"

Materials Needed

Textbook, Internet, teacher handouts

Time Requirement

2 class periods

Procedure/outline

After studying ch. 1 on the Five Senses, students will read teacher handouts on "White noise" and the theory that supports findings form commercial products such as "Soothing Waters" that claim the sound of waves recorded in Oregon and California enhance one's ability to relax and fall asleep. Students create a questionnaire on falling asleep to soothing sounds. Student will survey a population of adults and peers. Students will address the theory and draw conclusions from their research. Approximately 3-4 persons per group.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Students will record the sounds of water, from either a waterfall or rushing rapids or waves. Students will play the sounds for test subjects & see if they become more relaxed and fall asleep.

Assessment

Survey results. Peer review of group project; compare & contrast results.

Other Comments

Cultural differences may exist that differ in perception of sounds/vs. noise.
