Objectives

Students will recognize how their senses provide them with details about stream ecosystems.

Standards Addressed

Science: 2.4.1, 2.4.5, 3.4.1 Visual Arts: 6.4.2 Language Arts: 4.4.2(4c)

Materials Needed

Touch-and-feel bags (dark bag with materials that could be found near a stream). Copies of Sensory Observation Sheet. Pencils & crayons.

Time Requirement

30 min & 60 min (2 time periods)

Procedure/outline

Review the five senses: How are they used in daily life? Distribute touch-and-feel bags to groups-ask them to identify objects inside by touch alone. Tell students they will visit a stream & will be recording how they use senses to observe the stream. Hand-out Sensory Observation Sheet. Explain that students should write down or draw things as they preceive them. Have students find a quiet spot near the stream to observe using their five senses.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Have students write poems or draw pictures inspired by their observations. Have students guide a blind-folded partner to a quiet site. Have student recall sounds, smells, & feelings experienced.

Assessment

Have students record observations. Create a mobile that icludes things observed with each of their senses at the stream.

Sensory Observation Sheet: 4 quarters on sheet - one each for sights, smells, touch, & sounds.
