Objectives

Students will know which soil types filter water faster than others.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

Styrofoam cups or other containers w/lids, sand, silt, clay, gravel, moss, etc. (enough to fill container)

Time Requirement

Teacher prep-10min. 1 class period for students.

Procedure/outline

1. Poke a hole in the bottom of each cup. 2. Fill each cup with each soil type and cover with lid. 3. Poke a hole in the top of the lid to add water. 4. Mark each container with A,B,C,D, etc. 5. Have students add water to each container and guess which cup has which soil type. 6. Discuss with class and unvail the answers.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

1. Discuss soil triangle 2. Have students mix soils to compare 3. Measure the flow rates through the individual soils

Assessment

Written report to explain activity and findings.
