Objectives

The students will find the (approximate) volume of water from the point bridge in Grand Forks to the Sorlie Bridge in Grand Forks.

Materials Needed

100' tape measure/weight 1#-5#, data collection sheet, 2 way radios

Time Requirement

filed trip (1 morning or afternoon)

Procedure/outline

1. Discuss the basics of volume and scope. (3-dimensional figures) 2. Split class into groups. Have students measure length of river section, width across bridges, and depth of river. (record and calculate) 3. Discuss the flow rate of a river. 4. Drop cork into water and time between bridges. Calculate flow rate.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Discuss what flood stage would do to the flow rate.

Assessment

Test or quiz on ficticious data.
