Objectives

Students will graph the levels of Lake Sakakawea from 1968, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2005. Students will draw conclusions from their graph; students will demonstrate critical thinking in possible impacts these fluctuations have on recreation, wildlife, tourism, human population demographics.

Materials Needed

Copy of Forum article June 26, 2005 pages A1 and A2, computer lab, software such as Microsoft Excel

Time Requirement

2 class periods of 50 min. each

Procedure/outline

Since 1953, the level of this lake has fluctuated. From 1968 the average elevation has been about 1,942 ft above sea level. Class will locate Lake Sakakawea. Students will discuss the value of this lake to the human/non-human populations. Students discuss reasons why lake levels vary from year-to-year. Students consult the Forum article and each creates the graph. (Prior to this lesson, students will have experienced bar graphs). On day 2, students bring their bar graphs to class & draw written conclusions (at least 4). Students compare bar graphs and written conclusions are discussed.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Graphs can be color coded, enlarged, displayed. A member of the DNR could be invited to speak to the class about Lake Sakakawea.

This plan could be used cooperatively with math dept. in a cross-curriculum approach.
