"Paddle to the Sea" Story Book and Canoe Project

Objectives

Culminating activity for the study of Kwakiutl Indians. Students will use authentic designs on their canoe to be released when we got to the MSUM Science Center in the spring.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

"Paddle to the Sea" storybook, canoe, markers, authentic Kwakiutl markings (designs) on canoe

Time Requirement

Read story throughout unit. Allow 20-30 minute chuncks of time until decorated. Approximately 2 chunks of time, more if needed.

Procedure/outline

1. Read and discuss the story "Paddle to the Sea". Point out landforms in the story (MN standard). 2. Kwakiutl Indians lived in NW Canada by the ocean and used cedar to build canoes. Students will decorate canoe as the Kwakiutl Indians would have done. 3. Explain "River of Dreams" and how we will do the same when we have our spring tirp to the MSUM Science Center.
