Objectives

Students will study the symbols, petroglyphs, reference to the Native American Tribes (Mandan, Hidatsa, etc.) of the Upper Missouri River. Students will improve map skills of the Missouri River in ND and south throughout the U.S.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

wooden canoes from Center for Watershed Education, symbols, references to natives on the Upper Missouri to use as inspiration for decorating individual canoes, detailed maps of ND & other states along the Missouri, website for tracking canoes (www.tri-college.org/watershed), Paddle to the Sea picture book & video (H.C. Holling), sharpie pens.

Time Requirement

 

Procedure/outline

Order canoes. Study/practice drawing symbolic images of regional native people-draw designs on canoes. Teacher read/student read picture book Paddle to the Sea and/or view video. Launch boats-in Bismarck-go to local spot/Fort Lincoln/Fort Mandan. Track progress on website-if any are found, mark maps on the locations.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

Students can also make predictions as to how far they think their canoes will go.

Assessment

Students can explain why they picked designs and show their artwork to class.

Share where other canoes have been launched and found from other students in ND schools.
