Objectives

Students will measure accurately to show prairie plant height & length of root mass.

Materials Needed

Root systems of prairie plants poster, light weight rope-2 colors, tags with twistties and pictures of prairie plants

Time Requirement

30 minutes

Procedure/outline

1. Students will work in groups and measure out rope - one color for plant measurement & one color for root length. 2.Tthe ropes are then knotted together with a small picture of plant tied at the knot. 3. Plant ropes are displayed with the knots level-(ground level).

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

The root mass enables plants to be drought resistant and hard to eradicate. Student can extend this activity to graden plants & grasses with comparisons.

Assessment

Students will measure plants & roots accurately & be able to show the soil line on the plant ropes.
