Objectives

To have students learn about the four components of habitat and how a territory relates to the survival of an organism.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

cotton balls, scents - 1 scent for each territory (peppermint, lemon, anise, etc.), playground area, covered containers, scratch paper, marker to label cards

Time Requirement

55 minutes

Procedure/outline

1. Marked off lg. area into territories (i.e. playground, etc) 2. Apply scent to cotton balls & place in seperate covered containers. 3. Just prior to conducting the activity, mark each territory with differnt scented balls. 4. Place 4 seperate pieces of scratch paper labeled with each component of habitat within each territory. 5. The playground represents a wetland. Divide students into territories evenly. 6. Assign each group a scent, give 5 to 10 minutes to located the territory with their matched scent. 7. Have them locate component cards for their territory. Ask about personal needs of their territory-"Survival"

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

1. Have the students map all territories. 2. Have them research other wetlands.

Assessment

Have students write a story about a year in the life of a mustkrat.
