The students will be able to define natural springs and make a connection to Teddy Roosevelt/North Dakota.

Time Requirement

One hour

Procedure/outline

Read the short story pg. 33 entitled President. Define natural springs. Where does it fall in the H2O cycle? Research and locate US and Canada Natural Springs-teacher will find a few websites appropriate for this activity. Have students list interesting facts and location. Discuss T. Roosevelt's tie to ND and the naming of the ND National Park. Include some of his personality traits that were pulled from the story. Add natural springs to our class water book.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

How did Native Americans use natural springs? How are they used today? Interview a doctor/perosn who has been to a natural spring.

Assessment

Students will write a learning ticket defining a natural spring and the significance that Teddy Roosevelt played in ND's history.
