Objectives

Students will write a creative writing piece based on the book Paddle-to-the-Sea.

Standards Addressed

Materials Needed

Book Paddle-to-the-Sea, paper, pencils

Time Requirement

2-3 days (50 minute periods) instruction & independent work time

Procedure/outline

Activity 1: Teacher will read Paddle-to-the-Sea out loud to class. Students will note the adventures of Paddle on a graphic organizer. Activity 2: Students will write a creative piece about an object making a journey. Must be at least 3 pages long & typed. Teacher will demonstrate his/her own writing. Activity 3: Students will decorate & launch their own canoes & watch the ride of Paddle-to-the Sea while working.

Modifications/Adaptions/ Extensions

A more complete graphic organizer & a copy of the book could be supplied to students with special needs. The length of the paper can be adjusted.

Assessment

The creative piece will be graded according to a rubric that includes: appropriate length, grammar, content, complexity, and organizaiton.

Other Comments

Can be adapted for any level of English class.
